How much does Etsy take?
In the US, Etsy takes three fees on a normal sale: a flat $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item plus shipping, and a 3.0% + $0.25 processing fee on the buyer's total. The three fees, and their different bases
The thing that makes Etsy confusing is not the number of fees, it is that they are charged on different amounts. Here is each one, applied to a real sale:
- Listing fee: a flat $0.20. Charged when you list and again on renewal; a listing expires after four months. One listing is used up per sale.
- Transaction fee: 6.5%. On the item price plus the shipping you charge, and on gift wrap if you offer it. It does not apply to sales tax for US sellers.
- Processing fee: 3.0% + $0.25.On the buyer's full total, which does include applicable sales tax.
A worked example
Take a $25.00 item with $5.00of buyer-paid shipping and no sales tax, with the listing fee counted. Etsy's cut breaks down like this:

Why the flat fees punish cheap items
Two of the three fees are flat: the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 fixed part of processing. That is 45 cents you pay on every sale regardless of size. A percentage is the same slice of any sale, but those flat cents are a growing share as the price falls. On a $4 item they are over 11% before a single percentage is added, so the effective rate spikes. On a $150 item the same 45 cents barely registers.

Offsite Ads and the fee US sellers skip
There is one more fee to know, and one you can ignore. Offsite Ads is Etsy advertising your listings on other sites; you pay only when a sale is attributed to one of those ads. The rate is 15.0% for shops under $10,000 in trailing-year sales (which can opt out), or 12.0%and mandatory once a shop passes $10,000, capped at $100 per order. Separately, Etsy's Regulatory Operating Fee applies only to sellers in a few other countries, so US sellers never pay it.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Partly, and this trips a lot of sellers up. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge the buyer, but not sales tax for US sellers. The 3% + $0.25 processing fee is charged on the buyer's full total, which does include applicable sales tax. So tax touches one fee but not the other.
Are Etsy's Offsite Ads fees mandatory?
Only for larger shops. Etsy advertises listings on other sites and charges you only when a sale is attributed to one of those ads. Shops under $10,000 in trailing-year sales pay 15% on an attributed order and can opt out; once a shop passes $10,000, the fee drops to 12% but becomes mandatory. Either way it is capped at $100 per order.
Why are Etsy fees so high on cheap items?
It is the two flat fees. The $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 fixed part of processing add up to 45 cents you pay on every sale no matter how small. On a $4 item that 45 cents alone is over 11% before any percentage is added, so the effective rate climbs sharply below about $10. On an $80 item the same 45 cents is well under 1%.
Is there a Regulatory Operating Fee for US Etsy sellers?
No. Etsy's Regulatory Operating Fee applies only to sellers based in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, or Turkey. US sellers are not charged it, so it is not part of your fee math or of this guide's numbers.
