The mechanics
How Whatnot seller fees work in 2026
Whatnot charges sellers two things. First, a commission on the item's final sale price: 8.0%for most categories, with a few lower ones (5% for Electronics, 4% for Coins & Money, and other select-category reductions). Second, a 2.9% + $0.30 processing feeon the buyer's whole total, which is the item plus the shipping and tax the buyer pays.
The key detail is what each fee is charged on. The commission touches the item price only, so buyer-paid shipping does not get commissioned. Shipping and tax only matter to the processing fee. And that flat $0.30 in processing is the fixed part: it is a large share of a cheap sale and a rounding error on an expensive one, so the effective rate climbs on low-price items, the same way it does on Depop.
For big-ticket sales, Whatnot added high-value pricing in January 2026: in select categories, commission is 0% on the portion of the item price above $1,500, so a $3,000 card in an eligible category is only commissioned on the first $1,500. Whatnot also runs occasional 0%-commission promos and regional events; those are not baked into this calculator, so confirm any promo rate against your own live show.

How much does Whatnot take per sale in 2026?
For most US categories, Whatnot charges an 8% seller commission on the item's final sale price, plus a 2.9% + $0.30 payment-processing fee on the buyer's total (item + shipping + tax). On a $20 item with $8 buyer-paid shipping and no tax, that is $1.60 commission + $1.11 processing = $2.71, so you keep $25.29.
What is Whatnot's commission on shipping and tax?
None. The 8% commission is charged on the item's final sale price only, not on the shipping the buyer pays or on sales tax. Shipping and tax only enter the math through the 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee, which is charged on the buyer's whole total.
Are all Whatnot categories charged 8%?
No. 8% is the standard rate for most categories, but a few are lower, such as 5% for Electronics and 4% for Coins & Money, and Whatnot offers other select-category reductions it does not fully list publicly. Use the category selector in the calculator to apply the right rate.
How does Whatnot's high-value order pricing work?
As of January 14, 2026, in select categories Whatnot charges 0% commission on the portion of an item's sale price above $1,500, so commission applies only to the first $1,500. Toggle "high-value eligible" in the calculator to model it, and always confirm your category qualifies.
Does the buyer or the seller pay shipping on Whatnot?
By default the buyer pays shipping, which is why it is a separate input here and feeds the processing fee rather than coming out of your payout. If you choose to cover shipping yourself, put that amount in the cost section so it lands in your profit, not as a marketplace fee.
