The mechanics
How Etsy seller fees work in 2026
Etsy is the opposite of a single flat fee: it charges three separate fees on a normal sale, and the catch is that they are not charged on the same base. A flat $0.20 listing fee covers the listing (one is used up per sale). A 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge, but not sales tax. And a 3.0% + $0.25 processing fee applies to the buyer's full total, which does include any sales tax they pay.
Two of those fees are flat: the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 part of processing. Together that is 45 cents you pay on every sale regardless of size, so on a cheap item those fixed cents dwarf the percentages. A $4 sale can lose more than 18% to fees while a $100 sale settles under 11.0%. If you sell a lot of low-ticket items, the fixed fees, not the 6.5%, are what quietly thin your margin.
The one optional charge is Offsite Ads: Etsy advertises your listings elsewhere and takes 15.0% (12% for larger shops, where it is mandatory) only on sales it attributes to those ads, capped at $100 per order. There is no Regulatory Operating Fee for US sellers; that one applies only in a few other countries.

Why a cheap Etsy sale costs far more than 6.5%
The same three fees at every price, but the effective rate collapses as the item gets more expensive, because the two flat fees are a huge share of a small sale and a rounding error on a big one. Item price only, no shipping or tax, to isolate the effect.

How much does Etsy take per sale in 2026?
Etsy charges US sellers three fees on a normal sale: a flat $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item plus shipping, and a 3% + $0.25 payment-processing fee on the buyer's total including any sales tax. On a $25 item with $5 shipping and no tax, that is $0.20 + $1.95 + $1.15 = $3.30, so you keep $26.70, an effective rate of about 11%.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Partly. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge, but not sales tax for US sellers. The 3% + $0.25 processing fee is charged on the buyer's full total, which does include applicable sales tax. That asymmetry is why this calculator takes tax as a separate input.
What are Etsy's Offsite Ads fees?
Offsite Ads is Etsy advertising your listings on other sites. You only pay when a sale is attributed to one of those ads. The fee is 15.0% of the order for shops under $10,000 in the trailing year (12% and mandatory once a shop passes $10,000), capped at $100 per order. Why do Etsy fees feel so high on cheap items?
It is the two flat fees. The $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 fixed processing fee add up to 45 cents that you pay no matter how small the sale. On a $4 item that 45 cents alone is over 11% before any percentage is added, so the effective rate climbs sharply below about $10.
Is there a Regulatory Operating Fee on US Etsy sales?
No. Etsy's Regulatory Operating Fee applies only to sellers in a handful of countries (the UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Turkey). US sellers are not charged it, so it is not part of this calculator.
